Chiltern-Mt Pilot NP
About this location
Chiltern–Mt Pilot National Park protects one of Victoria’s most important remnants of box-ironbark forest, with mugga ironbark and white box among the key flowering eucalypts. Their winter and spring blossom provides critical feeding habitat for nomadic nectar-feeders including swift parrot and regent honeyeater, and Parks Victoria identifies Chiltern as one of the state’s most important sites for both species.
The park also contains dry woodland, grassy understorey and granitic country around Mount Pilot, supporting an exceptionally rich woodland fauna. More than 200 bird species have been recorded, including turquoise parrot, painted honeyeater, barking owl and square-tailed kite, while large old trees and hollows are especially important for parrots, owls, gliders and other hollow-dependent species.
