Greater Bendigo NP
About this location
Greater Bendigo National Park protects more than 17,000 hectares around Bendigo, including some of the highest-quality box-ironbark forest remaining in central Victoria. The park also includes grassy woodland, broombush mallee and Kamarooka mallee, giving it a broader range of dry-country vegetation than the box-ironbark label alone suggests.
The box-ironbark communities are particularly important for nectar-feeding birds, with flowering eucalypts such as yellow gum, grey box and red stringybark providing seasonal food resources for species including swift parrot. The present forest also reflects a long history of gold mining, timber cutting and eucalyptus-oil production, which heavily altered the older woodland structure before much of the area was protected.
