Hattah-Kulkyne NP
About this location
Hattah-Kulkyne National Park protects a vast Mallee landscape of mallee woodland, native pine, black box and river red gum communities surrounding the Hattah Lakes system. Around Lake Hattah, Lake Mournpall, Nowingi Track and the Old Calder Highway, the vegetation changes sharply with elevation and flooding: river red gum fringes the wetter lake margins, black box occupies less frequently flooded country, and mallee and slender cypress pine dominate the higher sandy ridges.
The Hattah Lakes form a chain of 12 floodplain lakes fed from the Murray through Chalka Creek, with individual wetlands ranging from episodic to near-permanent. Their wetting and drying cycles create one of the defining ecological contrasts of the park, with flood-dependent woodland and wetland communities embedded within otherwise semi-arid mallee country.
