Lake Tyrrell
About this location
Lake Tyrrell is an ancient salt lake system north of Sea Lake that is dry for much of the year but can hold shallow water after rain. Its hypersaline conditions support salt-tolerant algae that can give the lake its characteristic pink colour, while the surrounding margins carry saltbush and samphire vegetation adapted to the highly saline soils.
The lake is also geomorphologically significant, with a history extending back more than 100,000 years and evidence of major shifts between wetter lake phases and the modern ephemeral salt-lake system. Today, the saltbush country around the margins is often more productive for birds than the lake itself, supporting dry-country species such as rufous fieldwren, white-winged fairywren and orange chat.
