Lake Wendouree

About this location

Lake Wendouree is a large artificial lake in central Ballarat, combining broad areas of open water with dense reedbeds, vegetated margins and a series of small islands isolated from the surrounding parkland. The western end around Fairyland and the North Gardens is the most interesting area for wildlife, with small wetland pools featuring a variety of ducks, cormorants, and other water birds. Rakali are also common here and are subject to formal, ongoing monitoring by the Australian Platypus Conservancy.

Reed islands on the lake itself attract magpie geese and migratory shorebirds such as sharp-tailed and wood sandpipers.

The North Gardens wetlands, constructed in 2001 to filter stormwater before it reaches Lake Wendouree, add further shallow ponds and densely vegetated habitat. This shallow, closed-in habitat can be more productive for spoonbills, grebes, and sacred kingfishers in the summer.
