About this location
Little Desert National Park protects a diverse dry-country landscape shaped by strong differences in soil and rainfall. Its vegetation includes extensive heathland, mallee and broombush communities, yellow gum woodland, black box and desert stringybark woodland, with the eastern and central blocks particularly noted for their heathlands.
Along the Wimmera River relatively intact river red gum communities and native grassy understorey form a striking contrast with the drier woodland and heath. The corridor is also important for nomadic and migratory birds and can provide major breeding habitat for waterbirds after inundation.
