Minsmere RSPBR

About this location

RSPB Minsmere protects an exceptionally diverse stretch of the Suffolk coast, combining extensive reed beds, shallow lagoons, wet grassland, lowland heath, woodland and vegetated shingle. Its reedbed and scrape are especially important for wetland birds, supporting nationally significant populations of Eurasian bittern, western marsh harrier and pied avocet, while the heathland supports species such as European nightjar and Dartford warbler.

Minsmere is also one of the most important sites in the history of British bird conservation. The RSPB’s management of the reserve helped pioneer the ‘scrape’—shallow lagoons and islands created for breeding and migratory waders—which has since become a standard habitat-management technique at reserves elsewhere.
