An Easter weekend trip across Wangaratta, Shepparton and Numurkah.
Winton Wetlands is an 8,750-hectare reserve in the Broken River catchment, encompassing 33 ephemeral wetlands surrounded by river red gum and box grassy woodlands. In 1971 the Winton and Green swamps and surrounding country were flooded to create Lake Mokoan, killing around 200,000 river red gums.
The reservoir was decommissioned in 2009 and is now the focus of one of Australia’s largest wetland restoration projects, with extensive work to restore river red gum, grey box and grassy woodland as well as the wetland vegetation itself. Thousands of dead river red gums remain standing across the former lake bed, giving parts of Winton a distinctive landscape while providing abundant perching and roosting habitat for waterbirds.
