This was a big year in birding for me, though not a Big Year. As 2025 winds down, I’m sitting on 453 species ticked worldwide, and 348 species within Australia. (e: final total 457 globally, 352 Aus).

My birding took me to central and north-west Victoria, the Riverina in New South Wales, and for the first time, parts of the Northern Territory and South Australia. Further afield, I recorded my first birds in the United Kingdom, Germany and the United Arab Emirates (a single cheeky rock dove at the airport as I transferred). I took thousands of photos – one or two were even good – and shared birding experiences with dozens of people along the way.

Trips and ticks

Though I travelled more overall this year, within Victoria I was more limited than in 2024. I didn’t visit Gippsland, the Wimmera, or the Great Ocean Road. I spent far less time along the Hume than usual, with only two short trips to Wangaratta. I haven’t been to Seymour (though there’s still a chance – the dollarbirds are back on the river walk…), Chiltern, Wodonga, or the High Country.

My state stats for the year reflect this. I’ve seen 253 258 species in Victoria, 60 61 per cent of the 422 recorded in the state this year. That puts me in 88th 83rd place overall. Last year I recorded 285 of 404 species, or 71 per cent; this resulted in 30th place.

The targets I have left for my year list also reflect my travels. They’re heavily weighted toward coastal and wet forest areas: Australasian gannet, Caspian tern, white-bellied sea-eagle, crescent honeyeater, Latham’s snipe, Lewin’s honeyeater, among others. Australian ringneck I somehow missed in Victoria despite spending a week in the Mallee and seeing them in both New South Wales and South Australia.

Globally, I added 168 birds to my life list this year.

The first three were early on New Year’s Day, when I met Veeraj S and Raghav S. In Greater Bendigo National Park we found shy heathwren, purple-gaped honeyeater and tawny-crowned honeyeater in the areas around Old Distillery Dam and Diamond Dove Dam.

I spent most of February in the United Kingdom, where I added another 80 species. This included some truly excellent birds like the stonechat, horned lark, snow bunting, Eurasian bittern, little owl and goldcrest. Among many highlights, seeing the UK’s first recorded glaucous gull in five years – and being the last person to record it before it flew away – was pretty special.

It was also bitterly cold.

I wrote up some thoughts about UK birding back when I was in the thick of it; I think it’s safe to say that I’ve only become more fond of it with time (but far less fond of driving there – I paid as much in parking fines as I did for the rental!)

On a short side-trip to Berlin to visit my friend Ezgi I saw a few more species: short-toed treecreeper, Eurasian bullfinch, Eurasian goshawk, middle-spotted woodpecker, Eurasian nuthatch and fieldfare. My biggest success here was not a lifer, but inspiring just enough birding interest in Ezgi that she now sends me photos of any Mandarin ducks that she sees around the city.

Once I was back in Australia things slowed down for a while.

I saw my first and Yarra’s first Pacific swift in March. In April, on a Western Treatment Plant trip with Ryan C and Joe G, we found an unexpected wood sandpiper. Later that same month, I had a hoped-for-but-not-guaranteed black falcon flyover at Kinnairds Wetland near Numurkah.

June saw a few twitches. I made my first trip up to Mount Korong to see a vagrant bar-shouldered dove. Jonathan T and I took a day trip to Warby-Ovens and stopped in to see an out-of-range Australian bustard on the way. On an unsuccessful brush bronzewing photography trip to Kamarooka I visited some incredibly not vagrant, very reliable plumed whistling-ducks at Elmore.

In August I went to the Northern Territory for the first time. My aunt and uncle generously hosted me in Darwin, where I did some birding in and around the city. I got to visit Lee Point and learn from locals about the ongoing effort to protect this crucial habitat, and at Corroborree Billabong we saw plenty of crocodiles and learned about Indigenous knowledge of the flora and fauna of the region.

In the middle of the trip I drove out to Kakadu for five days. This was the single best birding experience I’ve had: I loved being around Jabiru, having all the time in the world to slowly explore Ubirr, Nourlangie and Mamukala.

Another 70 lifers came from this trip, including chestnut-quilled rock-pigeon, gouldian finch, banded fruit-dove, rainbow pitta, little kingfisher and comb-crested jacana.

In September I saw a grey goshawk (white morph) over the Deep Rock Road Ovals in Yarra Bend, another first for both me and the LGA. A few days later Jono and I took a trip up to the Riverina, visiting some of my favourite spots around Deniliquin, Narrandera, Leeton and Griffith. On the drive back I stopped for a questionable common ostrich tick at Thule.

October was a comparatively quiet month, but I did see my first red knots on Hobsons Bay Big Day – even better, Jono and I came first in the three-hour competition!

Later that month I also took my annual trip up to the Mallee. In past years this has been paired with a few days in the Wimmera, but after terrible fires in Little Desert last year (which destroyed the Little Desert Nature Lodge), I elected to head northwest and cross into the South Australian Riverland. I won’t hurry back to Loxton, Berri and Renmark, but it was nice to experience once.

If I head that way again next year I want to spend more time exploring Murray-Sunset National Park. I took my first trip in trying to find a red-lored whistler (success!) and it was fantastic.

There were another four lifers: rufous fieldwren, Mallee emuwren, inland dotterel, and, over in South Australia, white-backed swallow. The emuwren in particular was a big highlight – I’d chased it each time, of course, but only found it thanks to some very specific and spot-on advice from Ian M.

My final lifer for the year came just a couple of weeks ago when, like every other birder in Melbourne, I zipped down to Beach Road near the Western Treatment Plant to twitch an oriental plover. It took me two trips to find the thing – a tiny, pale blob in the heat haze through a kind stranger’s scope, happily hidden among the cowpats.

(e: in the end, oriental plover was not my final lifer for the year: a house crow turned up in South Melbourne and I saw it on 29/12.)

Photography

My proudest moment this year (beyond photography, and perhaps even beyond birding) was when one of my chestnut-quilled rock-pigeon shots was chosen to be the lead image on the Birds of the World species page – my first such honour and, honestly, the best possible outcome for me. I love columbids and specifically immediately fell for chestnut-quilled rock-pigeons as soon as I first encountered them, so to be able to represent my favourite bird with my work is a genuine thrill.

I also had two photos on the eBird Australia front page. One was a holdover from last year, a swift parrot shot taken in Chiltern which I was slow to upload, but which quickly made it to the front page once I did and stayed there for months. The other photo was of a pink-eared duck stretching its wings at sunrise. It’s not a photo that I particularly like, and I complained about it specifically in a trip report, but I guess I was alone in thinking it was terrible!

I haven’t made it back to the global eBird front page since the first time it happened: a white-browed scrubwren shot taken in Yarra Bend last year.

Less editorial choice than popularity, on the illustrated checklist for Victoria I snagged the bar-shouldered dove slot with my fairly lacklustre effort with the Mount Korong vagrant. Best of a bad bunch. This is my fifth on the Vic photo list, after rainbow bee-eater, white-browed scrubwren, white-browed babbler and common myna.

On the South Australian illustrated checklist this year I got blue-faced honeyeater, and on the Northern Territory I got Caspian tern and golden-headed cisticola. None of these are good photos!

The photos that I’m personally most proud from this year of include eastern reef egret, tufted duck, Eurasian moorhen, Eurasian blue tit, Mandarin duck, mallard, European stonechat, rainbow pitta, Mallee emuwren, gang-gang cockatoo, partridge pigeon and of course, chestnut-quilled rock-pigeon.

After seeing them previously, I finally got shots of crested bellbird, striated grasswren, restless flycatcher and zebra finch. Thanks India for the help finding crested bellbird locations in particular, and in Hattah NP more broadly.

I improved on my previous photos of great heron, spotted pardalote, grey currawong, long-billed corella, masked lapwing, and crimson rosella, the latter with a lovely moment as two yellow subspecies individuals in Deniliquin shared some food.

Stats

Here are my most-recorded birds in Australia in 2025. Note that this first chart is a count of checklists, not a count of individuals.

What stands out is how local these birds are. You’d be hard-pressed to spend an hour in Yarra Bend on any day of the year and not encounter all of these 15 species.

You have to get down to bird #36, masked lapwing (78 checklists), before that’s no longer true – certainly can be found in Yarra Bend, but I couldn’t tell you where one is on any given day. The first bird that is uncommon in Greater Melbourne is peaceful dove (#52, 53 checklists). The first non-Victorian bird* is bar-shouldered dove (#64, 40 checklists) – (*) with the caveat, of course, that there was the Mount Korong vagrant. It appears one spot higher, surprisingly, than the far more locally abundant common bronzewing.

Jumping up to the order level, it’s entirely unsurprising that passeriformes – the most diverse order of birds in the world, including honeyeaters, ravens, magpies, thornbills, pardalotes, whistlers, and so many more – was the top by far, with 161 different species observed. Second to that was charadriiformes (broadly shorebirds, including oystercatchers, curlews, avocets, sandpipers), psittaciformes (parrots, including lorikeets, rosellas and cockatoos), anseriformes (ducks, geese and swans), pelecaniformes (pelicans, but also cormorants and darters)1 and columbiformes (pigeons and doves).

At the bottom end of the scale I saw only one species from the otidiform (Australian bustard) and ciconiiform (black-necked stork) orders, and two struthionformes (common ostrich and emu).

I saw three each of galliformes (landfowl: orange-footed megapode, malleefowl and brown quail) and podicipediformes (grebes: Australasian, hoary-headed and great crested). I limited these results to Australia, but if I was including the UK I would have added one more species to each of these orders: ring-necked pheasant and little grebe.

Further, I think I got shortchanged by one galliform. There is a longstanding population of released Indian peafowl at Lake Wyangan, Griffith – there are records of them going back decades – but eBird still lists them as ‘Escapees’ rather than ‘Provisional’, so they don’t count. Oh well.

Lastly, just for a bit of fun – the number of times that I recorded each resident mainland columbid in 2025. Rock dove, spotted dove, common bronzewing, brush bronzewing, crested pigeon, and peaceful dove I had seen previously and saw again. Eight were new for me this year: chestnut-quilled rock-pigeon, partridge pigeon, diamond dove, bar-shouldered dove, Pacific emerald dove, Torresian imperial-pigeon, banded fruit-dove and rose-crowned fruit-dove.

Four species I’ve seen before but didn’t find in 2025: white-headed pigeon, brown cuckoo-dove, wonga pigeon and topknot pigeon.

There aren’t too many pigeon ticks left for me in Australia, and they’re all species that are furthest from Melbourne: white-quilled rock-pigeon, spinifex pigeon and flock bronzewing in arid northern Australia, wompoo fruit-dove and superb fruit-dove in wet forested areas along the east coast from Sydney to FNQ, squatter pigeon in the interface between the two habitats, collared imperial-pigeon in the Torres Strait and introduced barbary doves around Adelaide and laughing doves around Perth.

In the UK I also ticked stock dove while in Godmersham and Eurasian collared-dove in Walthamstow Marshes. I saw plenty of chunky common wood-pigeons too, though this wasn’t new to me.

Community

I was very pleased to spend a lot more time volunteering my birding skills this year, hopefully contributing some useful data to conservation projects and helping get other people interested and educated on our local fauna.

I’ve continued to survey at Yellingbo NCA, making six trips out there. This is my favourite bit of birding I get to do. The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater are great company and the reserve itself is phenomenal – I highly recommend getting involved if you can. I was particularly happy to be able to take Matt R along when he visited Melbourne from New Zealand back in April. He even mentioned me on his excellent podcast!!

In 2025 I continued to lead trips with our local Birding in Yarra group; we managed another six outings. I was very pleased when Bao S and Nat T (better birders than me) asked me to lead two groups from Unimelb’s wilderness society around Yarra Bend. In November I led a Friends of Merri Creek survey at bababi marning after attending that site a few times previously. Jono and I continued our monthly surveying for the Abbotsford Riverbankers on their managed area of the Yarra. I was finally able to join Friends of Royal Park at their December survey.

I also partnered up with Mappa Outdoor to guide with the City of Yarra, and for a special Great Aussie Bird Count Week event with Collingwood Library.

I’ve also made some new friends.

It was great to finally meet Matt in person when he visited from New Zealand in April, and through him I met Jeremy – another excellent photographer who I knew of from Instagram. Veeraj I met last year; this year I met his brother Raggie, and V introduced me to Ryan and Joe. Ryan was visiting from Queensland but has since moved to Melbourne and now lives just down the road.

I’m temperamentally a loner, probably to an unhealthy degree sometimes, so it has been nice to meet so many others who are keen to join for a few hours or a few days.

I also relaunched my website this year, and quickly started writing trip reports. I’d written a few of these personally and had been producing them for the Birding in Yarra group, but in 2025 I started to do this more regularly and intentionally.

I knew that mixing work with this hobby was courting trouble, but it was still a slightly surreal experience when I introduced myself to a (very friendly) Department bureaucrat in a professional setting and she immediately responded (very kindly) “Oh the birdwatcher! We love looking at your photos in the office!” Beyond that, I’ve heard from birders that they enjoy reading the trip reports that I write, and I’m always chuffed when somebody shares one.

Here are the five most viewed trip reports of 2025:

The top two, Yarra Bend and A Day in the Bay, were both reports of larger group events – leading the Unimelb Wilderness Society and the annual Hobsons Bay competition; most traffic for those came in from social and probably includes a lot of the dozens who were part of it.

The Loddon and Warby-Ovens reports got a fair bit of referral traffic from twitchers. Both reports had vagrants (The Mount Korong bar-shouldered dove and Benalla Australian bustard, respectively) and I managed to get onto both early enough that traffic suggested people were coming in via search, my guess is looking for those birds.

The Ballarat and Bendigo report though? I’ve truly got no idea. I remember that trip being personally interesting – I stayed with my friends in their new house, took some nice photos, met up with Jono at Crusoe Reservoir – but there was nothing super exciting about anywhere I birded or what I saw. So I’m not really sure there!

My plan is to keep writing reports next year, and to continue writing up the series on Yarra Bend that I’ve started publishing.

2026

After all that it’s probably not a surprise that I’m feeling a bit burnt out. Between travel and volunteering I had a birding event almost every weekend in 2025, with plenty of local solo outings on top of that. I’m also specifically tiring of taking photos. I’m not taking my camera out with me as much, I’m not shooting as often when I do, and it’s taking me longer to process and post.

My loose idea for how to spend my time in 2026 is to bird less overall but spend that time learning about a select few places and species. I don’t want to spend the year chasing lifers and LGA ticks again, though inevitably there will be some of this: I do need to go and see that Cape gannet at Point Danger before it eventually leaves.

I’ll share some more thoughts on this in a few days. For now, I’ll just say that my lowercase big year was tiring but an excellent year as well.

The easiest source of that was BirdLife Australia’s Working List of Australian Birds (WLAB), so I matched the two sources. This statement (and my laziness) is a downside of that approach: while Clements adopted the suliformes order for cormorants and darters more than a decade ago, WLAB still lumps them all in as pelecaniformes.
