Changes were observed at 20 news outlets in Q3.

In July the operating entity for 6 News Australia was changed from Atelier Puglisi Pty. Ltd.1 to a new sole trader entity in the name of the publisher, Leo Puglisi.2

North East Media acquired the Alexandra-Eildon-Marysville Standard and the Yea Chronicle effective 1 July.3

Eastern Ranges News launched on 1 July in Melbourne’s outer east.4 The title was formed out of the merger between the existing Emerald News and Hills News (formerly 3781 News) titles, which consequently have been listed as closed.

Moree Online News changed hands in July 2026. Founders Bill and Cindy Poulos sold the title to a new company, Moree Digital Pty Ltd, and its owner Michael Phipps, who said in an introductory post that the title would continue and remain free to read.5

In July the Neerim Star reduced its print frequency from monthly to every two months. Editor Jodi Kellow said that the change would allow for the team to ‘gather richer stories, connect with more locals and craft each edition with the care and depth our community deserves’.6

The Eatons Echo changed its name to the South Pine Echo in July 2026, reflecting a wider coverage area in Brisbane’s northern suburbs.7

The Post ended its print publication from 1 July 2026, shifting to digital only. It continues to produce a digital version of its monthly magazine.8 In announcing the change, publisher Tina Brown said that going digital would allow for a broader coverage footprint across Sydney’s north and more stories.9

The North Coast Post10 launched in August 2026 in the City of Stirling in Perth’s northern suburbs. It is the second title from the Post Newspapers company.

Five newspapers published by Hyperlocal News in inner Melbourne were merged into one title this quarter. The final editions of CBD News,11 Docklands News,12 Inner City News,13 North West City News14 and Southbank News15 were published in August before being replaced by The Melburnian from September.16 Publisher Sean Car wrote that the new publication has the “same local focus, same commitment to print, but with a broader lens across the entire City of Melbourne”.17

The Coonamble Times18 and The Western Plains App19 both suspended activity in August. The titles had been due to be sold and a new editor had been appointed, but publisher Lee O’Connor wrote that both individuals withdrew at short notice. As a consequence both have stopped publishing until further notice. I will schedule a further review of both toward the end of the next quarter.

Ballina News Daily, a digital publication on the north coast of New South Wales, announced its closure on 29 September. Publisher Rod Bruem said that the decision was prompted by medical advice.20 The title was founded in early 2025.

Other data changes

The following are changes that were made to the data but which did not occur during the reporting period. These can be corrections to data, or market changes that occurred during a previous quarter but which were not captured at the time.

Dates listed as ’31/12/18′ reflect that the change occurred prior to the start of data capture on 1 January 2019, not that it occurred on that particular date.

The Gisborne Gazette was added to the data in Q3/25. On review this month, I found that it was incorrectly listed as having opened in 2020 when it has been running for many years. This has been corrected. Operation of the Gazette was also transferred from the sole trader ABN of a committee member21 to a dedicated business entity in July 2024.22 This is also now reflected in the data.

My Village News was a standalone monthly news magazine operating in Brisbane. It launched in October 2020 and operated until July 2023, when it was acquired by Local News Publisher Pty Ltd and split into two separate magazines: Village Voice (New Farm) and Village Voice (Ascot). These latter two titles were already present in PIPI but the change of operating entity was not reflected.

3781 News launched in Cockatoo, Victoria, in June 2020. It was renamed Hills News in July 2025 to reflect an expanding coverage area. As described above, in July 2026 it merged with Emerald News to form the Eastern Ranges News.

Two newspapers in Western Australia, the Augusta-Margaret River Mail and Busselton-Dunsborough Mail, have been updated following review. The data incorrectly had the owner of these two titles as Australian Community Media but they were acquired by SEN in April 2023.23 This has been corrected. In the period since that acquisition both have ceased publishing to their websites and instead in late 2025 launched a new Issuu account.24

The Armidale Times was a print-only community newspaper in Armidale, New South Wales, founded in 2020. The title closed in April 2024, publisher Rod Wise confirmed in an email.

The operating entity of the Wellington & District News was changed. It was previously listed to the sole trader business of Sharon Wilson25 but this was transferred to a family partnership with husband Mark Griggs in October 2024.26

Four changes involved My City Media in the City of Logan, Queensland. Suburban Life: Logan East, a monthly news magazine, was closed by the company in August 2025. In March 2026 three new titles were launched in the same area previously covered by Logan East: Suburban Life: Beenleigh,27 Suburban Life: ‘The Wood28 and Suburban Life: Yarrabilba.29

3799 Connect is a community newspaper that opened in October 2025 covering the shared suburbs of postcode 3799 in the eastern Yarra Ranges, including Warburton, McMahons Creek and Reefton.30

View News, a news website on the Sunshine Coast, has not published an article since 12 March 20269 and I was not able to reach the owner. In September 2026 the owner’s sole trader registration, under which View News operated, was cancelled.31 When a title does not publish an article for a full quarter my approach is to list the title as Inactive. A second consecutive quarter without activity will see the outlet listed as closed. After being initially listed as Inactive in Q2, I have listed this outlet as closed in Q3, as of the date of its final article.

Douglas Gazette ceased as a standalone publication in December 2025.32

Leigh News, a community newspaper in Inverleigh, Victoria, reduced its frequency from monthly to quarterly beginning in 2026.33

In February 2026 The Core, a community newspaper in Harcourt, Victoria, reduced its publishing frequency from monthly to every two months. This change was made in the aftermath of a bushfire that significantly impacted the town. It was initially announced for six months,34 but the editors confirmed this frequency would continue in the June 2026 edition.35

The Welcome Record, a community newspaper in Dunolly, Victoria, published its final edition in February 2026. Editor Angela Ang wrote that the newspaper had struggled to attract volunteers.36

In March 2026 the Wangaratta Chronicle ended its Monday edition, reducing its frequency from three times to twice per week. An editorial said that the change was due to a greater shift to digital-first publishing.37

The Quirindi Advocate, a newspaper serving the New England town for a century, ceased publishing in May 2026. The closure of Australian Community Media’s printing press in nearby Tamworth and economic pressure facing the industry more broadly were given as the reasons.38

Rainbow Beach Cooloola Coast Community News, a monthly magazine, did not publish an edition during Q3.39 Its most recent edition was June 2026, though this is inaccessible on the website. I have listed it as inactive from the date of its most recent edition. If it does not return to publication by the end of Q4 I will list it as closed.

The Hunter River Times closed in June 2026.40 It launched following the suspension of the Hunter Valley News in early 2020.41

The operating entity of the Brimbank & North West Star Weekly, Maribyrnong & Hobsons Bay Star Weekly, Melton & Moorabool Star Weekly, Northern Star Weekly, Sunbury & Macedon Ranges Star Weekly and Wyndham Leader was changed from Star News Group Pty Ltd42 to MMP Star Pty Ltd.43 This is a correction of the data rather than reflective of a market change: MMP Star is a company within the Star News Group.

Added the Riddells Creek Neighbourhood House as the operating entity of the Riddell Roundup.44

The operating entity of the Northern Valley News was changed. It was previously listed as a partnership entity, J Bay Shervington & T.J Preston, but has been changed to the sole trader entity Preston, Tamieka Jayne. The partnership entity was cancelled in September 202445 while the sole trader continues to operate and has owned the business name Northern Valley News since 2017.46 It appears that listing the partnership was an error in the data, not that the business was transferred.

Primary format

The approach of both PIPI and PIJI’s ANDP before it was that where an outlet had a physical print edition, it would be assigned as a Print primary format. This approach was recognition of the fact that most news media businesses that publish printed editions have done so for most of their histories and that digital publication tended to follow the rhythm of print publication: stories would be prepared for print first and published online according to that schedule. It also avoided adding an assessment of an outlet’s content to determine whether material was appearing both online in print, which appeared to be leading the other, etc.

On review this month, the following outlets with physical print editions were found to be incorrectly assigned as Digital primary format outlets:

  • Dunoon & District Gazette
  • Greenbushes-Balingup Newsletter
  • The Indigenous Business Review
  • Mandurah Times
  • Manly Observer
  • The Bugle

Print frequency

A small number of outlets publishing a physical print edition did not have a listed print frequency. These have been resolved.

  • Gundagai Independent
  • Mandurah Times
  • Manly Observer
  • Sea Lake & Wycheproof Times Ensign
  • The Bugle
  • Tumbarumba Times
  • Tumut and Adelong Times

Outlet Start – Version Start inconsistency

A large number of outlets were found to have a first Version Start date which was incorrectly one day earlier than the Outlet Start date. These two fields should always match. The consistent one-day discrepancy suggests a data transformation issue occurred at some point. Eighty-seven records were affected by this issue and have been fixed.

Coverage area

For a local government area to be listed as part of an outlet’s coverage area in the Public Interest Publishers Index, it needs to meet a minimum threshold of an average of one story per month over the preceding year. Every outlet in the data is reviewed at least annually, and in this process I check that this threshold is still being met.

The following changes to coverage areas were made following a review of these outlets:

  • Busselton-Dunsborough Mail: Removed Nannup.
  • Canberra Times: Added Queanbeyan-Palerang, Yass.
  • Cape York Weekly: Added Aurukun.
  • Countryman: Removed Beverley, Boddington, Bruce Rock, Chittering, Cuballing, Cunderdin, Dalwallinu, Dumbleyung, Goomalling, Kellerberrin, Kondinin, Koorda, Merredin, Moora, Mount Marshall, Mukinbudin, Mundaring, Narembeen, Nungarin, Quairading, Tammin, Trayning, Victoria Plains, Wandering, West Arthur, Westonia, Wonga-Ballidu, Wyalkatchem, Yilgarn.
  • CQ Today: Added Woorabinda.
  • Daily Liberal: Added Bourke, Cobar. Removed Brewarrina, Warren.
  • Great Southern Herald: Removed Boyup Brook, Cranbrook, Denmark, Kent, Plantagenet, Woodanilling.
  • Kalgoorlie Miner: Removed Ngaanyatjarraku
  • Kimberley Echo: Removed Ashburton.
  • Midwest Times: Removed Carnamah, Chapman Valley, Coorow, Cue, Dandaragan, Irwin, Meekatharra, Mingenew, Mount Magnet, Sandstone, Three Springs, Wiluna, Yalgoo.
  • Northern Valley News: Added Swan.
  • NT Independent: Removed Tiwi Islands.

I have also adjusted the coverage maps of two McPherson Media titles, the Yarrawonga Chronicle and Corowa Free Press. Where multiple titles owned by the same company are in neighbouring areas, I work from the assumption that journalism is produced by one and shared with the other, unless there is evidence to suggest otherwise. For example, the Yarrawonga Chronicle had previously been assigned to the Federation local government area across the river in Murray. This is Corowa’s council, and it is unlikely that the Chronicle was producing news about this area independently of the Free Press.

The following coverage changes have been made after reviewing these two outlets:

  • Corowa Free Press: Added Murrumbidgee, removed Indigo.
  • Yarrawonga Chronicle: Added Indigo, removed Federation.

Changes to coverage areas generally aren’t dated; they’re retroactively applied to the record as a whole.

Other

Glen Innes News, a news website in Glen Innes, NSW, has been removed from the data. On review it does not meet the independence test: it is edited by David Scott, a councillor in Glen Innes Severn Council.47 It appears that Cr Scott was elected shortly after the outlet was founded,48 and as such, it should have been removed from the data at that time.

Back Country Bulletin announced that it would close as of 30 September,49 with its coverage being re-centralised into the Riverine Grazier. This change has not been made in the data as the Riverine Grazier is a LINA member and the change was announced too late in the quarter to go through the independent review process. I will put this closure forward for the next quarter.
