Some thoughts and my research activity in the fortnight ending Sunday 2 August 2026.

This was a particularly unproductive period on the PhD front for me. I spent a day preparing a research funding bid, half a day on some RA work, two hours watching people give their research milestone presentations and then twice that long freaking out that I’ll never be smart enough to do one of my own.
Progress isn’t linear, I know that, despite the line-go-up suggestion of the metrics that I track each fortnight here. Still, feels bad!
The time that I did spend working I largely put into updating the Public Interest Publishers Index, my ongoing news data project. With the end of July I had a bit of record review to get finished.
Next week I’ve got a writing bootcamp, a meeting with a mentor, and two supervisory meetings, so hopefully all of that will help to get me back on track again.
