About this location
The Bendigo Water Reclamation Plant at Epsom combines a large system of treatment lagoons with farm dams, drainage basins, irrigated paddocks and smaller wetland areas. The ponds provide extensive feeding and roosting habitat for waterbirds and waders, while remnants of box-ironbark and grassy woodland persist elsewhere on the property. The permanent water also makes the site an important refuge during dry periods.
The plant is particularly significant for its population of growling grass frogs, one of the largest known populations in central Victoria, and has long been recognised for the diversity and abundance of waterbirds attracted to its lagoons.
The treatment plant is not open to the public but can be scoped from Wallenjoe Road.
