Herring Island
A Birding in Yarra trip to Herring Island grabs an LGA first.
Herring Island is a small artificial island in the Birrarung/Yarra River, created in 1928 when a new river channel was cut through a former basalt quarry. Since then it has been extensively revegetated with indigenous woodland and grassland, including river red gum, manna gum, drooping sheoak and native wallaby- and spear-grasses, while the old quarry and river engineering remain legible in the landscape.
The island now functions as a compact wildlife refuge and environmental sculpture park within inner Melbourne, with river-edge vegetation and reedbeds supporting waterbirds and the denser plantings providing habitat for woodland species.
