Jerrabomberra Wetlands NR
About this location
Jerrabomberra Wetlands Nature Reserve protects 174 hectares of the Molonglo River floodplain, about four kilometres from central Canberra. Its present wetland system was strongly shaped by the filling of Lake Burley Griffin in 1964, which raised the water table across the floodplain. The reserve now includes open water, reedbeds, mudflats, billabongs, wet grassland and riparian habitat, with Kellys Swamp and the Jerrabomberra Backwaters among its best-known features.
The vegetation is highly modified rather than remnant: exotic grassland dominates much of the reserve, while common reed and bulrush form dense wetland margins and planted native woodland and shrub areas add habitat diversity. The wetlands are nationally important and provide significant habitat for waterbirds, including migratory shorebirds and species dependent on shallow water, mudflats and reedbeds.
