Piccaninnie Ponds CP
About this location
Piccaninnie Ponds Conservation Park protects an exceptional system of groundwater-fed karst springs, coastal fen and permanent freshwater wetlands near the South Australian–Victorian border. The main ponds plunge to more than 110 metres and support unusually deep aquatic plant growth because of their exceptional water clarity, while surrounding peat fens, silky tea-tree shrubland, sedgelands and open heath create a diverse wetland landscape.
The reserve is internationally recognised as a Ramsar wetland and preserves some of the few remaining permanent freshwater wetlands in south-east South Australia, where extensive drainage has eliminated much of the original wetland system. It supports threatened species including Australasian bittern and swamp antechinus, as well as breeding and migratory waterbirds.
